Citations lend credibility to responses, but a cited hallucination is harder to catch than an uncited one because it looks verified when it is not. Math and logic tasks are consistently weaker than research tasks. The tool loses context across long conversation threads, and the Android app has recurring complaints about PDF reading failures.

The publisher controversy is also real. The New York Times, News Corp's Dow Jones and New York Post, and the Chicago Tribune have all filed copyright lawsuits against Perplexity, alleging unauthorized scraping and near-verbatim reproduction of content. Perplexity has responded by signing revenue-sharing deals with outlets including Time, Fortune, Le Monde, and the Los Angeles Times, but the litigation remains ongoing as of early 2026.
